    Benromach Distillery(22 Sep 2007)



    Forres駅の近くにあるBenromach蒸留所は1898年の創業。しかしいくつかの19世紀末のウィスキーブームに乗って建てられた蒸留所と同じ様に操業は順調ではなく、1900年からウィスキー造りは開始されたがすぐに停止。
    1911年には早くもオーナーが代わり、操業を再開したが第一次世界大戦のため、休止。その後幾度もオーナーが代わって操業を再開するもすぐ停止を繰り返し、最終的に1953年にDCLが買収し、操業を再開した。
    1966年に蒸留所は建て直され、1974年に設備の近代化が行われたが1983年に閉鎖された。
    1993年にElginの瓶詰業者であるGordon & MacPhail社が買収し、5年間の改装工事を経て1998年に操業を再開した。
    小規模蒸留所なので買収や生産調整の対象になりやすかったのかも知れない。現在もその規模はあまり変わってない。

    Benromach Distillery was established in 1898 near Forres Station. However, the bussiness was not doing well in the same way as some of distilleries which were built during the Whisky Boom in the 19th, whisky production was started in 1900, but stopped immediately.
    The owner was changed in 1911 and restarted the operation, but stopped because of World War 1. After that, the distillery was repeated changing a owner, restarting and stopping.
    Finally, Benromach Distillery was acquired by DCL((later United Distillers) in 1953 and restarted making whisky.
    The distillery was rebuilt in 1966 and renovated in 1974, but it was closed in 1983.
    In 1993, Benromach Distillery was acquired by Gordon & MacPhail, independent bottler in Elgin, and restarted whisky production after restoration for 5 years.
    It might be easy to become a target of the purchase and the production adjustment because of a small distillery. The scale doesn’t change very much now.

    Glenlossie蒸留所は1876年にElginの南約6km、River Lossieの近くに、元Glendronach蒸留所で所長を務めていたJohn Duffによって創業された。
    彼は19世紀末のウィスキーブームの間に、1894年にLongmorn蒸留所、1898年にBenriach蒸留所を建設した。
    しかしウィスキーブームの終焉を迎えると1900年にBenriach蒸留所が操業停止、1909年にLongmorn蒸留所を手放し最終的に1919年にGlenlossie蒸留所はDCL社(UD社の前身)によって買収された。
    1962年に拡張工事が行われ、1971年には同じ敷地内の東側にMannochmore蒸留所が建設されている。

    Glenlossie Distillery was established by John Duff who was a former manager of Glendronach Distillery on the site of about 6km south of Elgin, near River Lossie in 1876.
    He built Longmorn Distillery in 1894, Benriach Distillery in 1898 during the Whisky Boom in the end of 19th.
    However, the Whisky Boom had finished in the early 20th century. Benriach Distillery was mothballed in 1900 and Longmorn Distillery was sold in 1909. Finally, Glenlossie Distillery was purchased by DCL(later United Distillers) in 1919.
    Glenlossie Distillery was expanded in 1962 and Mannochmore Distillery was built on the east side in the same site in 1971.

    Longmorn蒸留所は1894年にGlenlossie蒸留所の所有者John Duffによって19世紀末のウィスキーブームの間に建設された。しかしウィスキーブームは終焉を迎え、John Duffは破産。1909年に新しい所有者によって操業が再開された。
    1970年にGlenlivet蒸留所、Glen Grant蒸留所と合併し、1978年にシーバスブラザーズ社の蒸留所となった。
    1994年までは石炭焚きのポットスティルが存在したが現在はスチーム加熱に変更されている。
    以前発売されていたオフィシャル15年のウィスキーは好きなボトルの一つだけど最近はほとんど見ることがない。

    Longmorn Distillery was built by John Duff who was a owner of the Glenlossie Distillery, in 1894 during the Whisky Boom in the end of 19th. However, the Whisky Boom had finished and John Duff went bankrupt. the distillery was restarted making whisky by a new owner in 1909.
    Longmorn Distillery merged with Glenlivet Distillery and Glen Grant Distillery in 1970, and those became a part of Chivas Brothers in 1978.
    There had been wash stills heated by coal until 1994, those have converted heating by steam now.
    One of my favorite whisky is distilleries bottling Longmorn 15 years old released before, but I don’t almost watch it these days.

    Glen Elgin蒸留所は1898年に創業した、Speysideに造られた19世紀最後の蒸留所。周辺の蒸留所と同じく、Morayshire Railwayの側に建設された。
    しかしこの頃からスコッチウィスキーの需要は落ち込み、1902年に規模を縮小して何とか操業を開始したが5ヶ月後には早くも倒産と言うウィスキーブームに乗り遅れた蒸留所だった。
    1930年にDCL社(UD社の前身)に買収され、1964年に近代化・拡張工事されたが伝統的なワームタブ式の冷却装置はそのまま残されて、現在では蒸留所の特徴の一つとなっている。

    Glen Elgin Distillery was established in 1898, it was a last distillery which was build in speyside in 19th. Same as neighbouring distilleries which were established in the end of 19th, Glen Elgin Distillery was built beside Morayshire Railway.
    However, sales of Scotch Whisky fell around 1900, plan of distillery was reduced. The distillery started to make whisky in 1902, but it became bankrupt after 5 months. It failed to keep up with the Whisky Boom in the end of 19th.
    Glen Elgin Distillery was purchased by DCL(later United Distillers) in 1930, and it was renovated and expanded in 1964. However, worm tab didn’t change to modern cooling system, it is one of the symbol of the distillery now.

    Coleburn Distillery(21 Sep 2007)



    ElginのバスステーションでDufftown行のバスに乗り込む。Coleburnまでのチケットを買うと、
    "蒸留所を撮りに行くのか？"
    と運転手さんに聞かれた。
    彼も写真が趣味のようで私のカメラについていろいろと聞いてくる。
    Coleburnで降りる時、
    "この道を行けば蒸留所が見えてくる"
    と教えてくれた。
    木々に囲まれた道を歩いていくと、Charles Doigデザインの美しいキルンが見えてきた。

    I got in the bus to Dufftown at Elgin bus station and bought a ticket to Coleburn.
    The bus driver asked me,
    "Do you take photos of distillery?"
    He asked me about my cameras. I thought his hobby would be taking photos.
    When I got off in Coleburn, he said,
    "Go this way. So you can see a distillery."
    I walked the way among trees, and then I saw the beautiful kiln designed by Charles Doig.
