    The Way to Dallas Dhu Distillery(22 Sep 2007)



    Dallas Dhu蒸留所は地図上ではForresの中心部から南へ約2kmの所にある。これぐらいは徒歩圏内。Benromach蒸留所を後にして町の風景を楽しみながら歩く。
    やがて町並みは途切れ牧草地の丘を進む道路は上り坂。重たいカメラバッグに加えてBenromach蒸留所で買ったウィスキー・・・スコットランドの旅はいつもこのパターン。
    ようやく丘を登り切って下りにさしかかった時、モルトキルンと古い造りの煙突が見えてきた。もう少しで到着だ。
    でも同じ道を帰るのだから、また上り坂が・・・いや今は考えるのをやめよう。Dallas Dhu蒸留所の見学を楽しもう。

    Dallas Dhu Distillery was about 2km south from Forres town centre on the map. It was within walking distance for me. After I left Benromach Distillery, I walked to Dallas Dhu Distillery and enjoyed the scenery of town.
    After a while, the scenery was changed and the road which passed through the hill of meadows was an uphill slope. And I was holding a heavy camera bag and a bottle of whisky which I bought at Benromach Distillery.
    I often faced this situation during Scotland tour, it was a very hard!
    When I finished climbing the hill and approached the down slope, a malt kiln and an old style chimney came in sight. It would be arrive shortly.
    However, I had to come back through the same way, uphill slope again…
    No, let’s stop thinking now, enjoy the distillery tour at Dallas Dhu Distillery!

    Benromach Distillery(22 Sep 2007)



    Forres駅の近くにあるBenromach蒸留所は1898年の創業。しかしいくつかの19世紀末のウィスキーブームに乗って建てられた蒸留所と同じ様に操業は順調ではなく、1900年からウィスキー造りは開始されたがすぐに停止。
    1911年には早くもオーナーが代わり、操業を再開したが第一次世界大戦のため、休止。その後幾度もオーナーが代わって操業を再開するもすぐ停止を繰り返し、最終的に1953年にDCLが買収し、操業を再開した。
    1966年に蒸留所は建て直され、1974年に設備の近代化が行われたが1983年に閉鎖された。
    1993年にElginの瓶詰業者であるGordon & MacPhail社が買収し、5年間の改装工事を経て1998年に操業を再開した。
    小規模蒸留所なので買収や生産調整の対象になりやすかったのかも知れない。現在もその規模はあまり変わってない。

    Benromach Distillery was established in 1898 near Forres Station. However, the bussiness was not doing well in the same way as some of distilleries which were built during the Whisky Boom in the 19th, whisky production was started in 1900, but stopped immediately.
    The owner was changed in 1911 and restarted the operation, but stopped because of World War 1. After that, the distillery was repeated changing a owner, restarting and stopping.
    Finally, Benromach Distillery was acquired by DCL((later United Distillers) in 1953 and restarted making whisky.
    The distillery was rebuilt in 1966 and renovated in 1974, but it was closed in 1983.
    In 1993, Benromach Distillery was acquired by Gordon & MacPhail, independent bottler in Elgin, and restarted whisky production after restoration for 5 years.
    It might be easy to become a target of the purchase and the production adjustment because of a small distillery. The scale doesn’t change very much now.

    Elginの歴史は古く、10世紀頃には既に存在したと考えられている。1136年にはスコットランド王、David一世から自治都市に指定された頃にはこの地方の中心都市だった。今でも古い建物が多く残る。
    町の中心広場にある大きな教会、St Giles’ Churchは1224年に創設された歴史のある教会で現在の建物は1826年に建てられた。他にも古い教会がいくつか残っている。
    歴史を感じさせる町を散策し、疲れたらパブで休憩。Gordon & MacPhailのショップでお土産探しと酒飲みには最適な町だった。

    Elgin is one of the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, probably existed in early of 11 century. Scottish King, David 1st chartered as a Royal Burgh in 1136. Elgin would be a capital in this area at that time. A lot of old buildings still stay in the town.
    There is the big church, St Giles’ Church in Elgin Town Centre. It was established in 1224, they has a long history. Current buildings were rebuild in 1826, and other some old churches are in the town.
    I took a walk in the historical town and had a break in a pub when I tired. And I enjoyed shopping to look for souvenir at Gordon & MacPhail shop.
    Elgin is one of the best town for drinker!

    Benriach蒸留所は1898年にGlenlossie蒸留所の所有者が第三の蒸留所として、Longmorn蒸留所の横に建設した。しかしこの事業拡大は完全に失敗と思われ、1900年に早くも操業を停止している。
    1965年にGlenlivet蒸留所に買収され、ようやく操業が再開された。1978年にシーバスブラザーズ社の蒸留所となっている。
    2002年に操業は再び停止されていたが2004年に新しいオーナーの元で独立系蒸留所となり、2012年には1999年まで行っていたフロアモルティングを復活させた。商品のバリエーションも増えている。

    Benriach Distillery was built next to Longmorn Distillery by owner of Glenlossie Distillery as the his third distillery. However, business expansion completely seems to be failure and the distillery stopped the operation as early as 1900.
    Benriach Distillery was purchased by Glenlivet distillery, and the operation was finally reopened in 1965. It became a part of Chivas Brothers in 1978.
    The operation was stopped again in 2002, and has become an independence distillery under the new owner in 2004. In 2012, they have restarted a floor malting which they did until 1999. The variations of the product increase.

    Glenlossie蒸留所は1876年にElginの南約6km、River Lossieの近くに、元Glendronach蒸留所で所長を務めていたJohn Duffによって創業された。
    彼は19世紀末のウィスキーブームの間に、1894年にLongmorn蒸留所、1898年にBenriach蒸留所を建設した。
    しかしウィスキーブームの終焉を迎えると1900年にBenriach蒸留所が操業停止、1909年にLongmorn蒸留所を手放し最終的に1919年にGlenlossie蒸留所はDCL社(UD社の前身)によって買収された。
    1962年に拡張工事が行われ、1971年には同じ敷地内の東側にMannochmore蒸留所が建設されている。

    Glenlossie Distillery was established by John Duff who was a former manager of Glendronach Distillery on the site of about 6km south of Elgin, near River Lossie in 1876.
    He built Longmorn Distillery in 1894, Benriach Distillery in 1898 during the Whisky Boom in the end of 19th.
    However, the Whisky Boom had finished in the early 20th century. Benriach Distillery was mothballed in 1900 and Longmorn Distillery was sold in 1909. Finally, Glenlossie Distillery was purchased by DCL(later United Distillers) in 1919.
    Glenlossie Distillery was expanded in 1962 and Mannochmore Distillery was built on the east side in the same site in 1971.
