Port Ellen Distillery(22 April 2004)
Glasgow Airportの近くのHoliday Innに宿泊した私は9:00のIslay行きに搭乗するためにホテルを出た。外は雨が降っている。さっそくのScotch Weatherの歓迎。
Islayまでの飛行機は日本のYS-11に似たプロペラ機。スコットランドでは離島便はプロペラ機がまだまだ主役だ。悪天候はあまりありがたくない。離陸するときになって更にひどくなってきた。
幸いにも飛行中は揺れもせず、着陸態勢に入る頃には雲が切れ、晴れ間が見えてきた。
“蒸留所が見えるかな？”
と期待したのだけど、見えたのは港町の側にある工場だった。あれがPort Ellen？でも赤い屋根のキルンがなかった・・・
数日後、Port Ellenに向かうバスの中から蒸留所を見たとき、建物が減っているのがわかった。既に取り壊し工事が完了したようでシンボル的な大きなキルンはない。蒸留所設備も取り除かれたようだ。ただ、Islayのウィスキー造りに携わっていることを主張するように大きなピート置き場にピートがたくさんあった。
I left Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport. It was not good weather. I had to get on a 9:00 flight to Isle of Islay.
That flight was a propeller plane, so bad weather was not welcome. When the plane took off, it rained strong.
Mercifully, the weather was getting better and I could see the island on the plane.
“Where is Port Ellen Distillery?”
But I saw only a plant near a small port town. I didn’t think it was Port Ellen Distillery. Because there was no red roofed malt kiln.
A few days later, I took the bus from Bowmore to Port Ellen. When I passed thought the side of Port Ellen Distillery, I knew that some buildings of distillery were demolished. There was not a red roofed kiln, it had been demolished.
Just they had a large peat shed on the plant, as if it insist on relation of making whisky in Islay.

Glengyle Distillery(26 April 2004)
Glengyle蒸留所は1873年に建設された、Campbeltownとしては3番目に新しい蒸留所。19世紀末に訪れたAlfred Barnardは、Glengyle蒸留所を小さくまとまった蒸留所と表現している。当時としては近代的な設備だったのだろう。
しかし多くの蒸留所と同じく、20世紀初めの暗黒の時代を乗り切ることは出来ず、1919年にオーナーが変わり、1925年に閉鎖された。その年の4月8日にはGlengyle蒸留所と同じく閉鎖されたDalaruan蒸留所の22,500gallonのストックがオークションですべて売却された。Glengyle distilery was built in 1873, it was the third-last distillery. Alfred Barnard described it as neat and compact when he visited distillery in end of 19th century. It would be a modern facility for the time.
However, Glengyle distillery was not able to survive the early 20th century in the darkest periods, like many of the distilleries in Scotland. The owner changed in 1919, and closed in 1925. 22,500gallon of whisky in warehouses, include another distillery, Dalaruan which was closed same time, was sold at auction on 8 April 1925.

Glen Moray Distillery(31 Oct 2001)
Elginの西、River LossieのほとりにあるGlen Moray蒸留所は1897年、West Breweryと呼ばれるビール醸造所（1815年創業)を改造して造られた。ビール醸造所が出来る前は処刑場があり、1962年の改築時に工事現場から人骨が出てきたという。しかしウィスキーブームが終わりに近づいた1906年頃に操業が停止された。1920年に現在の所有者、Macdonald & Muir社(現在のGlenmorangie社)によって買収され、操業が再開された。
1958年にはフロアモルティングを止め、サラディンモルティングに変換された。しかしそれが使用されたのは20年ほどでその後、モルトスターに外部委託するようになった。蒸留所のガイドの説明では軽くピートを焚いたモルトを使用しているとのこと。また、その時にポットスティルを増設し、現在の規模になった。
土地が低いために2002年11 月にはRiver Lossieの氾濫により、蒸留所が水浸しになり、一時操業停止に追い込まれた。
Glen Moray Distillery, which lies west of Elgin, by River Lossie, was established in 1897. It was converted from a old brewery called West Brewery, which was build in 1815, to a distillery. Before the brewery was build, it was a place of execution. When the distillery was rebuild in 1962, human bone was found in the land of distillery.
Glen Moray Distillery was mothballed in 1906 when the whisky boom was over. And then, it was acquired by Macdonald & Muir (latest Glenmorangie) and restarted. In 1958, the distillery was extended, two pot stills was added, and changed the method of making barley malt. they quited a floor malting and innovated a saladin malting for next twenty years. Now, they buy light peated malt from maltsters.
Glen Moray Distillery is in the site of low land near a river, so it was flooded and interrupted a operation because of flooding the River Lossie in Norvember 2002.

Jura Distillery(20 April 2004)
Isle of Juraで唯一の蒸留所は島の中心地(といってもすごく小さい)、Craighouseの町にある。現在の蒸留所の操業開始は1963年。その地に1810年に建設され、1901年に操業が停止された先代の蒸留所を再建する形で建設された。その地理的条件もあり、1600年代以前から密造は行われていたらしい。
Juraの非常に軟らかい水と軽めにピートを焚いたモルトを使用し、大型のスティルで蒸留することにより軽めのウィスキーが生産されている。しかし1810年の創業当時はとてもピートの味のするウィスキーを生産していたという。その当時のウィスキーは操業停止後1913年までにすべて島から出荷された。
Jura Distillery is only distillery in Isle of Jura, it is in Craighouse, Capital of Jura ( though it is very small town). Current distillery was build on the site of original distillery which was build in 1810 and closed in 1901, and started making whisky in 1963. Probably, there were some illicit distilleries in Isle of Jura and whisky would had been made since 1600s.
Whisky of Jura has mild and light taste, slightly smokey. It is made from mild water in Jura and light peated barley malt, and they use a large pot still. However, it is said that Jura whisky made in 1800s was very smokey and peaty. The whisky which was made by original distillery had been finished to ship all of whisky until 1913.

Port Charlotte(1)
Bruichladdich Distillery(24 April 2004)
Bruichladdich蒸留所はPort Charlotteから北東に2km程のところにある。ちょうどLoch IndaalをはさんでBowmoreの町の対岸にあり、美しいLochの眺めの向こうにはBowmore蒸留所が見える。創業は1881年でIslay では2番目に新しい。1995年に当時の所有者であったWhyte & Mackay社が操業を停止したが2000年に元Bowmore蒸留所のJim McEwan氏と瓶詰め業者であるMurray McDavid社が買収し、Bruichladdich Distillery社として操業が再開された。2003年には小規模ではあるがIslayで初めての瓶詰め施設が完成した。
伝統的なピート香の強くないモルトウィスキーをメインに、古い蒸留所の名をつけられた、ピート香の強いモルトウィスキー2種類の生産が開始されている。Port Charlotte、Octmoreと名付けられたこれらのモルトはPort Charlotteの町に残っているLoch Indaal蒸留所のウェアハウスで熟成されている。
Bruichladdich Distillery lie n north east of Port Charlotte. Just there on the opposite shore of Bowmore of town across the Loch Indaal. See the Bowmore distillery on the other side of the beautiful Loch view.
It was established in 1881, the second newest distillery in Isle of Islay.
Bruichladdich was mothballed in 1995 by Whyte & Mackay Co. Ltd. After that, Mr. Jim McEwan and Murray McDavid, independent Bottler, took over and restart to produce whisky. In 2003, they finished to build the bottling line, the first bottling equipment in Isle of Islay though it is a very small.
They produce not strong peat and smoking flavor malt whisky, it is their traditional style, and two types of strong peat flavor malt whisky, called Port Charlotte and Octmore. Those are aged in warehouse, remain of Loch Indaal distillery in the town of Port Charlotte.
